Throughout much of human history, people didn’t celebrate their birthdays. Many people didn’t even know when their birthday was.

Historically, only emperors and saints — you know, the big ones — celebrated birthdays and It's only in the 1800s that wealthier parents started celebrating their children’s birthdays which is now a trend that trickled down to the masses.

In the 1950’s your standard child’s birthday affair was an intimate gathering, some cake, some ice cream and not much emphasis on gifts. Flash forward to the 1980’s where birthday parties underwent a glow-up (and we all love a glow-up!)

Parents were getting savvier hosting parties at arcades, roller rinks and bowling alleys.

Birthdays at present have also changed dramatically. With an abundance of inspiration on social media and that constant need to ‘keep up with the trends’ and Sally down the street with her party planning perfection and perfectly curated Instagram posts, are we forgetting what birthdays are really about? Or have we got so much more at our fingertips to make a birthday that extra bit special?
